It was a fluke experiment that Sohaya Misra carried out in 2015 that led to the creation of her label, Chola, named after her nickname. Walking into a fabric store one afternoon, Sohaya came out with a bunch of materials to set up her own little workshop at home to experiment with designing. Working on a capsule line, she gave wings to her cutting, designing and sewing dexterities that she then showcased at the Vintage Garden Trunk Show in Mumbai. With an overwhelming response, the label started making waves and caught the eyes of prime stakeholders in the Indian fashion fraternity. Post her exhibit, Chola was invited to showcase her collection as part of the Gen-Next segment at Lakme Fashion Week. The brand also went on to win Grazia’s ‘Young Designer Label Alert’ award in 2016. Prior to launching Chola, Sohaya worked for 18 years in the films and advertising industry. A prominent stylist for many movies, Sohaya also worked as a freelance stylist for celebrities including Neha Dhupia and Manisha Koirala.
Chola became a popular label offered under the contemporary category of Ensemble after launching at Ensemble Kala Ghoda immediatelyt her after the Lakme Fashion Week Gen-Next show in 2016. With its fluid silhouettes, gender neutral genre, adventurous construction and layering, Chola pushes the conventional fashion boundaries. Working with brands like Chola highlights the change in the Indian fashion scene in modern and contemporary wear. Ensemble paves the way for Chola to be recognized on a global scale through our far-reaching clientele and conceptual stores. Available across all our stores and now here on our online website, Ensemble and Chola share a special connection focused on creating and promoting upscale Indian contemporary fashion with cutting-edge designs. “Ensemble is one of the oldest stores in India that embodies the legacies of its past in its present and will continue to do so! Chola has been happy to be a part of this legacy for the past few years. We look forward to the present and the future,” Sohaya says of her association with Ensemble.
Ensemble's merchandising team works closely with Sohaya and her team to ensure the most exclusive, trending and latest collections at the best prices, both for the online shop and our 5 stores across Mumbai and Delhi.
With no prior experience in fashion designing, Sohaya illustrates her designs based on her mood, state of mind and inspirations from her travels. Chola created her niche in the market with her layering concept and deconstructed easy-to-wear silhouettes that define a new experimental dimension. Her clothes can be layered and paired with numerous options and are interchangeable to create a different look each time. “As a stylist, this has been the key element in my design process. I like to believe my silhouettes are easy to wear while making strong and bold statements,” Sohaya said in a recent interview with The Knockturnal. Scrutinizing the difficulties she faced in finding silhouettes that suited different body types during her styling days, she pushed to resolve and translate this with her design approach for her own label.
Chola does not confine its aesthetics and design creations to any specific age, size, body type or gender. Each piece is simple yet makes for a fashionable statement, winning customers with its eccentric approach. Keeping an ‘everyday woman’ in mind, Sohaya’s designs give shape, form and fluidity with movement that pay attention to detail. Chola experiments with a wide range of contemporary silhouettes such as tops, shirts, tunics, jumpsuits, jackets, kaftans, pants, skirts, draped dhoti skirts, boleros and dresses. Living her mantra of ‘less is more’, Sohaya keeps her clothes clean and crisp focusing on edgy detailing. A deconstructed Chola dress that is easy to slip on will take you from a day at the office to an evening for dinner with the girls. The unique signature category of the brand is its fluid and flattering bottoms. The low crotch trousers make for a cool statement when paired with a silk shirt and metallic hoops for a date night. You could also wear the trousers with a matching crop shirt by the label for a chic, luxe casual look. A ruffle shirt paired with a Chola drape sari skirt and sneakers will definitely make an impact at a brunch party.
Sustainability plays a strong role for the label and Sohaya aims to work with fabrics that are made from post-consumer waste cotton. Transcending with her design language, Sohaya plays with the textures of linen and recycled, organic cotton. White, black, grey and beige are the classic colours of the brand. Sohaya does add tints of colorful hues like blue, yellow, red, purple, burnt orange, sage green and burgundy from time to time to add freshness to her signature silhouette range. While a black kaftan is a forgiving silhouette for a woman of any age for a beach party, a jumpsuit from the brand looks smart, edgy and is an appropriate option for a resort theme event. With its unconventional detailing techniques like exaggerated stripes, giant bows, dramatic fabric straps, stylized ruffles or magnified buttons, Chola captures an exclusive audience with her designs.
Characterizing her unique and quirky design attitude since the label’s launch at Lakme Fashion Week, Sohaya has always managed to add a whimsical dimension to her fashion shows. They are not just a ramp walk but an immersive experience in itself. The ‘Bye Felicia’ esoteric themed show in 2018 focused on drag culture and the gender-neutral genre, making waves in the fashion industry. In 2019, collaborating with Reebok, the inspiration behind Sohaya’s collection was ‘theory of movement’. She concented on fluidity with ensembles tailor-made for dancing and an immersive, unique dance performance as part of the fashion show. Sohaya has also managed to capture loyal patrons in the Bollywood fraternity with her garments. Sonam Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Neha Dhupia, Kriti Sanon and Parineeti Chopra have all been dressed in the label.
