In 2009 Chinar Farooqi launched her label Injiri. Injiri literally and symbolically translates to “Real India.” By exploring indeginous weaving techniques, sourcing local textiles, and taking inspiration from the common man, Chinar has ensured that her collections have a connect to grassroots India. Sustainability and craft are the pillars of Injiri’s DNA.
Ensemble and Injiri both share a love of Indian textiles & weaves and the process of turning these into luxurious everyday wear. Injiri’s union with Ensemble began in 2018 with her launch at the Ensemble Khan Market store in Delhi. It was the first physical presence for the brand in the city. Expressing the association in her own words, the designer said, “Ensemble has given me space to be who I am, the relationship has been very generous and accepting from their side.”
Creating awareness of textile weaving techniques and India’s craftsmanship is central to Ensemble’s vision as a brand and as a store. With the addition of Injiri, Ensemble has added a new and valuable dimension to its contemporary and textile offering.
Ensemble's merchandising team works with Injiri’s team to ensure the most exclusive and premium latest collections at the best prices, both for the online shop and our 5 stores across Mumbai and Delhi.
Chinar’s design philosophy is based on her love for traditional textiles and craft, as seen in the following quote from the designer: “The clothes are actually little stories about the textiles they are made of.” Each Injiri collection is a celebration of Chinar’s visual inspirations, combined with textiles and techniques discovered by Chinar on her travels.
One can see a number of varying craft, dyeing and weaving techniques across all Injiri collections, ranging from bandhani tie and dye to chikankari embroidery to jamdani weaves. Flawlessly blending together these typically stand alone techniques and processes is Injiri’s forte. For example, it is not uncommon to see a panel of bandhani in a jamdani dress or chikankari embroidery on a bandhani tunic. Injiri’s signature fabrics include cotton muslin, silk, and khadi allowing her garments to be worn for a host of occasions, from casual to semi-formal. Injiri collections are also known for their separates - tops, dresses, angrakha tunics, bottoms, saris, and scarves.
Apart from regular daily wear, Injiri winter and outerwear collections have also garnered a lot of attention. Crafted in luxe merino wool and cashmere, the winter collections include dresses, shawls, scarves, skirts, and jackets. Always maintaining a commitment to sustainable design and Indian craft, the winter garments include elements of Indian textile as well.
Injiri is best known for luxe everyday wear. Chinar’s strength lies in understanding the needs of a modern day working woman. Taking you from a work meeting to a lunch and then on to some errands, an Injiri a-line dress styled with sneakers is a perfect comfortable option for a day about town. Wear her saris with the right accessories and you are ready for a chic dinner. Chinar’s peplum tops, jamdani overlays and angrakha tunics are easy to style with other basics in your wardrobe. We love that Injiri garments can be easily transitioned from day to evening with the right accessories and footwear.
From fresh summer hues such as sunshine yellow, lime, and baby pink to deeper and more somber tones of red, green, blue, grey and black, Injiri collections include the full gamut of the colour spectrum. While each collection will always include the classic and understated black and white pieces, there is always a range in bright and cheerful tones, broadening the aesthetic appeal of the brand.
Injiri outfits have a unique versatility about them. They are contemporary in design and function but can just as easily be worn for more ethnic occasions. Injiri silk tunics can be paired with scarves from the collection and are great options for early morning poojas or festivities. An Injiri bandhani silk sari is also a perfect choice for a pooja or a formal dinner.
Injiri’s commitment to traditional Indian textiles, crafts and techniques in contemporary shapes have earned the brand a wide domestic and international audience. As seen on Belgian designer, Loulou Van Damme, Injiri combines India’s textile legacy and heritage with a modern charm.
