Kiran Uttam Ghosh bridges the gap between Indian and contemporary wear with the designs under her namesake label. After graduating from Sophia Polytechnic College in Mumbai, Kiran got the opportunity to train under respected British designer Jasper Conran. This work experience allowed her to explore and learn the art of paying attention to details, which is now a critical element of her work today. She went on to launch her label ‘Kimono’ before establishing the label under her own name in Kolkota in 1994. Kiran is also a respected associate member of the Fashion Development Council of India.
Kiran Uttam Ghosh’s designs are handcrafted with perfection. Based on traditional Indian ideas she creates new indo-western silhouettes, keeping her ensembles refreshingly dramatic, chic and dynamic and offering wearability for different types of occasions. The designer has managed to carve a niche for herself with her signature pieces, designing cool separates in bold neutrals interjected with pops of metallics and her trademark digital prints.
Pushing the boundaries with her cool, new aesthetic and making micro-pleated fabric the new ‘it’ trend, Ensemble recognized Kiran Uttam Ghosh’s talent and added her collection as a permanent part of our curation. “As a new designer I remember walking into Ensemble feeling like Alice in Wonderland. Two decades later I yet feel the same. There’s a special aura about Ensemble, in the way the displays are so perfectly imperfect. There’s grandeur and a magical charm with which they go about creating an amazing quantum of sales,” Kiran says of her connection with Ensemble.
Ensemble's merchandising team works closely with Kiran Uttam Ghosh and her team to ensure the most exclusive, premium and latest collections at the best prices, both for the online shop and our 5 stores across Mumbai and Delhi.

Kiran Uttam Ghosh’s signature identity is taking global silhouettes and juxtaposing them with local handcrafted textiles and giving them an edge. The label’s style offers a complete range of both pret and couture clothes. Combining understated elegance with a contemporary flair, Kiran’s collection is fresh and cool. She adds a modern touch to your Indian wardrobe with her mix of vintage and contemporary styles. Refusing to fall under a specific size bracket and keeping her canvas open, the collection is versatile and equally designed for those who have a perfect figure or those with curves and imperfections. Kiran Uttam Ghosh defies typical categorization with her unique silhouettes and timeless design.
Kiran’s line brings a wide array of premium stylized classics to which she adds some contemporary styles as well. The aim is to keep the collection refreshingly strong and independent while taking inspiration from the traditional. “The design sensibility of my work has always been based on the beauty of traditional clothes, whether it is the kimono or the lungi or the sari. The aim is to take the cherished garment and create something new, while respecting its original form. The new expression works with handcraft while keeping it relevant using technology. It’s about finding harmony between yesterday and today,” Kiran recently said in an interview with Telegraph India. Her range is wide from asymmetrical dresses to sculptural saris, including drape kurta sets, fusion style anarkali jackets, palazzo sets, high low dresses, draped maxis and separates like shararas, lungi saris, wrap tops, cape kurtas, dupattas and tunics.
The label uses a variety of fabrics such as chanderi, benarasi brocades, ikat, maheshwari silk, cotton, crepe, sheer organza and georgette. Various techniques are used on the garments such as hand block printing, digital printing and hand painting. Bold and striking floral motifs are often used throughout the collection as well. Some garments feature a moderate amount of embellishments such as delicate beading, mukaish work, gota work or zari. These are mixed with the brand’s signature technique of pleated texturing on fabric and draping. The collection features vibrant and bold colours such as fuchsia, magenta, ruby red, turquoise, teal, emerald green, blue, yellow, rust orange and also more subtle colours like salmon pink, ivory and pearl white. Use of metallic shades like silver and gold are also an integral part of the line and these are also often used through additional embellishments or printing techniques.
Kiran Uttam Ghosh’s collection offers versatile designer wear using asymmetrical styles, drapes and cowls, taking attention away from the usual symmetry of the body and making the wearer look slimmer. Turning a regular kurta into an asymmetrical tunic that can be worn as either a dress for a cocktail or at a mehendi event at a resort wedding if paired with a palazzo is part of the appeal of the brand. Further, each outfit is designed in a way that it can cater to both morning as well as evening occasions. The metallic dupattas in the line add a contemporary twist when paired with a traditional ensemble for an engagement or a sangeet. The pleated wrap top, arguably Kiran Uttam Ghosh’s best selling style, is such a versatile and forgiving silhouette that it is a must have in your wardrobe; easy to wear, practical and high on style. Wear it on a casual day-to-day basis over culottes when stepping out for lunch or wear it in a slightly more formal way over a pair of flared trousers with bold accessories. Depending on how you style your look, the silhouettes conform to neither Indian nor western sensibilities and this is what makes the brand so unique. Wear Kiran’s designs to a business meeting, brunch, cocktail party, engagement function or a reception for a sophisticated yet formal look. With its lightweight fabric and minimal embellishment, the pieces are also easy to carry to destination weddings.
Kiran’s rich pleated ensembles have been worn by several Bollywood celebrities including Karisma Kapoor, Shilpa Shetty, Neha Dhupia, Tabu, Sonali Bendre, Vidya Balan and Mini Mathur.
