Niharika Gupta started her brand “Notebook” in the year 2008 with a focus on minimalistic contemporary clothing. Her intent was to provide utilitarian outfits that were easy to use. Based out of Delhi, Niharika took her inspiration from school uniforms and used paper for re-engineering silhouettes. Her background from FDDI in Apparel Design and her work experience with contemporary designers like Hemant and Nandita, Lovebirds and Bodice provided her the expertise she required and she was soon using her technical skills to bring out a range of comfortable and relaxed clothing.
Taking her awkwardness as a teenager wearing uniforms into account, Niharika formed the foundation of her brand so perfectly called “Notebook.” She has strong feelings about not being allowed to wear pants to school post the age of 14 and felt the compulsion to wear salwar kameez was discriminatory and unfair. She is quoted to have said in a recent interview with FDCI, “ I found it to be discriminatory as I would have felt easy in pants as well, but I was denied that option and had to wear a salwar kurta after I turned 14. So I would borrow my brother’s shirts and would team them up with my school uniform pleated skirts, even when I hung out with friends after school. Later I developed this idea into a full-fledged line and it serves as the ethos of my brand today.”
Her designs soon found root with #EnsembleIncubator programme and she began retailing with the Kala Ghoda store last year. Since then, Niharika has constantly sent us new collections for our contemporary section. All her clothing has a signature power dressing style and are suited for the contemporary stylish Indian woman.
Notebook as a brand got its global retail platform at Ensemble. Sharing her sentiments on her association with us, Niharika says, “We have been working with Ensemble for a few years now. It was one of our first breakthrough store collaborations and ever since then Ensemble has played a significant role in the financial and marketing growth of our label. We are extremely thankful to the team for their constant dedication in uplifting young designers and continuously evolving the dynamics of the Indian fashion industry.”
Niharika and our team work together to bring her latest and most exciting pieces to all our stores and now our online site regularly.
SHOP NOTEBOOK COLLECTIONS: FROM URBAN UNIFORMS TO EFFORTLESS CONTEMPORARY
Re-engineering shirting fabrics with new tailoring techniques has helped give Notebook a contemporary update to polished uniform modern clothing for the urban woman. Practicing pattern manipulation and structural detailing, Niharika works on relaxed fits which is the main theme of her fashion philosophy. She is able artfully to give twisted A line dress a flared skirt with a cinched waist to create a feminine silhouette. Her emphasis on darts and pleats is a departure from the persisting anti fit look and just like a notebook, her clothing is pleated, folded and has no drapes. She often plays with patterns and is known to be able to create classic outfits like a T shirt, dress or jumpsuit made of pinstripe suiting. The label is known for no-fuss silhouettes, dramatic cuts and easy structured fits. One look at her clothes and you think of the modern woman, a business meet attendee who is particular about well cut and detailed tailoring.
Notebook has a complete range of contemporary clothing from tops, pants, shirts to jumpsuits and dresses wearable at both casual and formal occasions.
With the basic concept of stylish but simple easy to wear modern clothing in mind, Niharika often uses menswear as an inspiration. She re-engineers mens shirting and suiting to design with her favourite fabrics including poplin, gabardine, twill, pique, rayon and jersey. Her commonly used techniques are front flaps, side zippers, loops, collars, buckle belts and other such minimal detailing elements. Even something as simple as a black trouser with zippers teamed with a Notebook tailored shirt can create a significant style statement at a business meeting or even a lazy brunch. Either way, her brand is gaining popularity for its edge on power dressing women and being able to carry them through from morning meetings to formal evening dinners! Her dresses with cinched waists and her blazer jumpsuits double up for all occasions and can even be worn to a contemporary resort wedding. Niharika’s flair for colour can be a staid as black, brown, beige, navy, teal and terracotta red as well as whimsical with pistachio green, pinks and reds that are evident in her seasonal collections.
In addition, Notebook with its wide range of separates is available at affordable prices.
Notebook has created its mark with the range of separates offered by the brand, its affordable prices and its classic yet uncommon pieces. From making a jumpsuit out of checkered suiting fabric with enforced zipper detailing to pairing pin suit stripes with solid panels and fusing them with the skill of cut-pleat pattern, Notebook is a brand that offers an elevated contemporary look. Creating a feel of a modern school girl, the brand has quickly become a recognized name in the Indian fashion industry. The label has loyal clientele from the younger generation to established businesswomen and has also garnered attention from Bollywood celebrities.
The designer has dressed Sonam Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Taapsee Pannu, Ileana D’Cruz, Kalki Koechlin, Aditi Rao Hydari and Kajal Aggarwal to name a few. Notebook has also been featured in prominent fashion magazines like Harper’s Bazaar and Elle India.
