The emergence of the sari dates back to the Indus Valley Civilization where the sari was considered a piece of cloth draped on the body. Since then, sari has evolved into a wardrobe staple for Indian women and has gone through multiple developments in terms of design, style and aesthetic.Britannica encyclopedia defines a sari (often spelled as saree) as “a principal outer garment of women of the Indian subcontinent, consisting of a piece of often brightly colored, frequently embroidered, silk, cotton, or, in recent years, synthetic cloth five to seven yards long. It is worn wrapped around the body with the end left hanging or used over the head as a hood.” The sari is conventionally worn with a fitted bodice known as a choli and an inner skirt known as a petticoat.
